THE RATINGS

The star ratings are based primarily on current panel reviews. Sometimes reputation and track record of the vintage are considered. For instance, older vintages can be variable because of cellaring conditions and provenance. The ratings may differ to those in previous editions because vintages can evolve in surprisingly unexpected ways.

Primary tasting notes are based on the detailed notes of Andrew Caillard MW and the observations of The Rewards of Patience tasting panel. Tastings were undertaken at Penfolds Magill Estate in Adelaide, South Australia from 19 to 23 August 2019.

Secondary tasting notes, printed in soft grey, are based on the observations of Andrew Caillard MW and Penfolds winemaking team during recent Re-corking Clinics, at previous The Rewards of Patience tastings and supplementary tastings in March 2020.

During five days of tastings in August 2019, Penfolds winemaking team provided overviews of vintages and technical support for The Rewards of Patience panel. In addition, members of the Penfolds winemaking team participated in various parts of the tastings to provide technical context and background information.
