COMMENTS
Beautiful barrel-aged characters, richness, integration and complexity of flavour.
Grandfather was originally an old cask reserved for the Penfolds family. The cask was known as The Grandfather for its old age, but Grandfather Port did not appear on the stock sheets until the mid-1930s. Dr Ray Beckwith once said, My first contact with Grandfather Port was in 1935 when [Penfolds Nuriootpa Winery Manager] Alfred Scholz told me that it had its genesis in the 1915 vintage.
The Grandfathers benefit from extended maturation in very old small oak casks to enhance overall complexity and balance. After initial maturation, the wines are classified and then blended before entering the solera system.
The solera system used for Grandfather and Great Grandfather dates back to the 1990s, which is a combination of multiple vintages and the partial drawing down of each barrel ensures remarkable consistency of style and character.
