Penfolds experimented with a shiraz mataro blend during the 1950s and first released Bin 2 in 1960. It was discontinued during the 1970s at the height of the white wine boom and reintroduced to the Australian wine market in 1980, 1982 and 1983. Bin 2 was revived again with the 1991 vintage for the export market; principally the United Kingdom. Bin 2 Shiraz Mataro has become the entry point of the Penfolds Bin Range, offering collectors in Australia and abroad an authentic multi-regional South Australian red made in the typical Penfolds House Style.
A versatile style. Great early drinking for those who enjoy fruit sweetness and a good medium-term prospect for those who enjoy more savoury, complex flavours. FONGYEE WALKER, MW
2000 TO 2007 Drink now to past.
Multi-regional sourcing, robust winemaking techniques and a House Style of ripe fruit and ripe tannins have always given an underlying resilience to Penfolds reds. These vintages are past their recommended drinking window, but some bottles may be holding up, especially 2004 and 2006, if cellared in optimum conditions.
