Made only in exceptional grenache vintages where the colour, weight and density of fruit suits the Penfolds style.
2002 ««««« Drink now to 2025.
Medium-deep crimson. Developed plum, wood, varnish and praline aromas with herb notes. Sweet, musky and inky plum flavours with developed shellac, polished notes, fine loose-knit silky tannins and lovely mid-palate viscosity. Finishes slinky and long. Still delicious to drink.
A well-matured wine with plenty of soft spice and chocolate on the palate. Very suited for drinking now. A beautiful expression of grenache. (FW)
2016 ««««« Drink now to 2026.
Medium-deep crimson. Fresh and ripe crushed raspberry, red plum and violet aromas. A beautifully focussed wine with deep-set red plum, crushed raspberry and cranberry fruits, fine, loose-knit, brambly textures and a marked but balanced acidity. Finishes chalky sweet and long. Impressive wine.
Bright red cherry and raspberry fruits. Soft in texture but the alcohol is a little too obvious. An early-to medium-drinking style. (FW)
2018 «««« Drink now to 2030.
Medium-deep crimson. Fragrant raspberry, musky plum and a hint of eucalypt. A generous and sweet fruited wine with plentiful raspberry, plum and mulberry fruits. Supple sweet ripe persistent chalky tannins and fresh long acidity. A fruit bomb with underlying vigour.
Very fresh and lifted with lovely spice but seems overly tannic at this phase of its life. (FW)
