Bin 28 Shiraz is Penfolds oldest Bin-range wine. Developed in the wake of Max Schubert s Grange project, the first releases were based on the historic 19th-century planted Kalimna Vineyard, which was acquired by Penfolds in 1945. Increasing demand for this hugely popular wine allowed Penfolds winemakers to include material from other warm-climate South Australian wine regions.
The modern Bin 28 Shiraz epitomises Penfolds House Style with its ripe choco-berry fruits, ripe tannin structure and generous flavours. Although the style promotes early- to medium-term drinking, it has earned a reputation for punching above its weight. In the best Penfolds vintages, it can develop complexity and great character with long-term cellaring potential. It s hugely popular in the Australian secondary wine market and on wine lists all around the world.
Very much in Penfolds House Style and excellent continuity across all the vintages. FONGYEE WALKER, MW
1959 TO 1989 Past.
Vintages are somewhat variable. Many are now but fond memories.
1990 ««««« Drink now to 2030.
Medium-deep crimson. Dark chocolate, mocha and redcurrant aromas with tobacco leaf notes. Generous and supple with redcurrant and tobacco leaf flavours, fine loose-knit chocolaty textures and a touch of iodine, shellac and roasted walnuts. Finishes chalky firm and long and sweet. A classic mature Australian shiraz.
In prime condition with great complexity and freshness. (JH)
Gently autumnal, woodsmoke, gamey spice, fine leather and redcurrant notes, fine-supple tannins and bright acidity. Lovely richness and dimension on the palate with no sign of decay. (NB)
1991 «««« Drink now to 2032.
Medium-deep crimson. Lovely blackberry, dark chocolate, mocha, espresso and soy aromas with dried apricot notes. Well-concentrated blackberry, mocha and meaty flavours, fine plentiful chalky tannins, apricot/soy complexity and integrated fresh acidity. Finishes firm with plenty of mineral length. Superb Penfolds vintage.
Lifted but aromatic wine with dried cherry tobacco notes and firm tannins. (JR)
Soy sauce, cedar and a touch of camphor on the nose. Very big flavours still on the palate but fully matured to a meaty, tomato sauce savouriness. (FW)
1992 TO 1995 Best to drink soon.
Vintages are mostly variable in quality or past their best drinking.
1996 «««« Drink now to soon.
Medium-deep crimson. Developed earth, coffee, cherry liqueur and herbal medicine aromas. Fresh concentrated earth, coffee and cherry liqueur flavours, fine/chalky and slightly gritty textures and pronounced acidity. Sinewy at the finish with sappy notes. Still fresh and delicious to drink.
The walls and roof are still in perfect condition, but the soft furnishings are nowhere to be seen. Fresh bright dark cherry, minty/meaty notes but the shrill acidity emphasises the astringent tannins. (NB)
Beef stock and black fruits with Dutch liquorice and red dirt. Holding some richness but the tannins are now outpointing the fruit. (NR)
1997 «« Drink now to past.
Medium-bodied style with developed redcurrant fruits and firm, slightly leafy tannins. Still holding but best to drink up.
1998 «««« Drink now to soon.
Medium-deep crimson. Fresh and earthy dark berry and praline aromas with herby dark chocolate notes. Richly concentrated with dark cherry, praline and roasted walnut flavours, fine leathery dark chocolate notes, chalky-dense textures and integrated acidity. Not perfect but a well-regarded vintage.
Round and generous with sappy raspberry tobacco notes and creamy structure. (JR)
Beef stock, Irish mist and dark earth! (NR)
