The Rewards of Patience is a collaborative project, with a team of supporters and contributors involved in its production. This edition is a revised wine guide for Penfolds collectors, with an emphasis on tasting notes and drinking windows.
I would like to thank wine writers Fongyee Walker MW, James Halliday AM, Nick Ryan, Josh Raynolds and Dr Neil Beckett for their observations and perspectives. Chief Winemaker Peter Gago AC played an essential role as advisor and custodian, but never encroached on the independent spirit of the book.
Editor Nola James of Hardie Grant has skilfully sewn the manuscript into a seamless guide to all things Penfolds. Publisher Courtney Nicholls, also of Hardie Grant, managed the project from beginning to end.
Winemaker Support Manager Jane Gibbs, Penfolds historian and memorabilia collector, has been an invaluable support. Retired Senior Red Winemaker John Bird was not able to attend the tastings, but his encouragement and first-hand knowledge of the old days at Penfolds are both gratefully acknowledged. Technical Assistant Ben Mehrtens and Global Ambassador Jamie Sach are also old hands and were particularly helpful. Although former Chief Winemaker John Duval did not participate in the tastings, he was in my thoughts as I ploughed through all those tasting notes! Winemakers of such standing always have a legacy.
Further behind the scenes, but very much involved in the action, were the Penfolds marketing team, especially Anna Curtin who patiently managed all the elements of this complicated book project. Also Ildi Ireland and Emma Franklin who played a significant role in bringing this narrative to life. Translator Kandy xu has been particularly forbearing as this project has unfolded. Her meticulous attention to detail has created a marvellous and engaging Mandarin edition.
Andrew Caillard, MW
Penfolds winemaking team comprising Stephanie Dutton, Emma Wood, Andrew Baldwin, Kym Schroeter, Matt Woo, Shavaughn Wells, Dominic Coulter, Andrew Hales, Shauna Bastow, James Godfrey and former Senior Red Winemaker Steve Lienert all contributed to the narrative of the book, not only by their presence, but also through the wines they make.
On a personal note, I would like to thank our friends Chris and Jody Aarons, of Hong Kong, who contributed some rare experimental Penfolds bottlings for the sake of posterity and the cause of fine wine.
Lastly, I would like to thank my wife Bobby Caillard for her loving and resilient support through months of writing and a long editing process.
