GRANDFATHER RARE TAWNY ««««« Each component can be from a single-vineyard block and grape variety, or a blended parcel and is aged in seasoned oak casks to form a minimum average blended age of 14 years before entering the Grandfather solera system. The wine represents a minimum average blended age of 20 years, although in theory infinitesimal elements of even older vintages exist. As a consequence, it is classified as a Rare Tawny.
Medium-brick amber. Beautiful roasted walnut, crème brûlée, toffee and panforte aromas. Supple and refined with intense panforte, raisin, candied fig, ginger spice and marmalade flavours. Fine-laced texture, density, and richness with acidity adding freshness. Finishes chalky-dry and sweet with notes of nut liqueur. Intensely concentrated tawny with wonderful length. An ethereal complexity.
Seamless in structure with dates, candied figs and salted caramel flavours, some spicy nuances, silky textures and long fresh brandy heat. (JR)

GREAT GRANDFATHER RARE TAWNY ««««« Series 19
Great Grandfather Rare Tawny was introduced in 1994 to celebrate Penfolds 150th anniversary. It has a minimum average blended age of 30 years. The series number denotes the number of times the solera has been drawn off this is the 19th bottling since 1994. The fractional blending system ensures the consistency of Penfolds House Style while its age and complexity of flavours is acknowledged by its Rare Tawny classification.
Medium-brick olive green. Intense marmalade, sandalwood, roasted walnut, panforte and brandy aromas. Smooth and generous with nutty panforte, marmalade and glacé fruit flavours. Extraordinary density with a velvety texture, superb viscosity and fresh brandy spirit. Finishes dry and firm with sandalwood spice notes.
A seductive array of spices, biscuits, dried and glacé fruit. The bouquet and palate are a pigeon pair. (JH)
Rich and smooth yet dynamic with amazing rancio, amontillado intensity, almost syrupy density/mellow viscosity and zesty long cutting spirit. (NB)

A blend of multiple vintages.
VARIETY
A core selection of shiraz, mataro, cabernet sauvignon, grenache and other legacy Barossa varieties.
ORIGIN
Multi-region fruit sourcing from the warm-climate regions of South Australia, especially the Barossa Valley and Riverland.
FERMENTATION
Fermented in various static fermenters and fortified with a distinctive Penfolds low-strength grape spirit.
MATURATION
Matured in seasoned oak hogsheads. Some components were aged further in the original Grandfather solera.
COMMENTS
Beautiful barrel-aged characters, richness, integration and complexity of flavour. Very limited with only 330 bottles released in each series. Classified as a Rare Tawny.
While age is important and a wonderful contributor it must be associated with the vitality and freshness
