KEY REGIONS
Adelaide, South Australia
The first commercial vineyards were planted around Adelaide in the late 1830s. Rezoning of vineyard land for residential purposes during the late 20th century saw a significant decline in plantings. The historic Penfolds Magill Estate is one of the few surviving vineyards from this era (and one of the few urban vineyards in the world). It has a warm, dry climate with moderating sea breezes and gully winds.
Adelaide Hills, South Australia
The elevated Adelaide Hills wine region, at the city s doorstep, was first planted to vines in 1843 and is the key source of premium cool-climate chardonnay and pinot noir. The region also contributes parcels of cabernet sauvignon and shiraz for some of Penfolds best reds. Adelaide Hills vineyards provide fruit for Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay, Reserve Bin A Chardonnay, St Henri Shiraz and wines from the Cellar Reserve range.
Barossa and Eden Valleys, South Australia
The Barossa, settled in the early 1840s, is home to many of Penfolds most celebrated vineyards. The district comprises two distinct sub-regions: the cool-to-warm Eden Valley and the warm Barossa Valley. The latter is home to Penfolds Kalimna Block 42 vines, which were planted in 1888 and are thought to be the oldest continuously producing cabernet sauvignon vines in the world. Kalimna, Koonunga Hill and Marananga vineyards (and others) provide fruit to some of Penfolds most iconic wines from Grange to Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz and Bin 28 Shiraz.
Coonawarra and Limestone Coast, South Australia
Weathered limestone under famed terra rossa soils and a relatively cool climate make Coonawarra one of Australia s most important fine wine regions, particularly for cabernet sauvignon. Its first commercial vineyards were established by John Riddoch in the 1890s, and Penfolds first acquired land here in the 1960s with the purchase of Sharam s Block. The region contributes fruit to Grange, Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon and some Special Bins.
