Wrattonbully, South Australia
Lying 24 kilometres north of Coonawarra, Wrattonbully was first planted with grape vines, especially cabernet sauvignon and shiraz, in the 1960s. With a similar climate and ancient reefs of terra rossa over weathered limestone, the region s pure and expressive wines complement their more famous neighbours. Fossils and megafauna can be found in the prehistoric limestone caves that lie underneath many of the vineyards. This region contributes to Bin 28 Shiraz, Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon and, from time to time, Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz and St Henri.
Robe, South Australia
The maritime wine region of Robe lies almost due west of Coonawarra on the edge of the Great Southern Ocean. It benefits from the Bonney Coast Upwelling, which brings cool winds and moderates the growing season. The soils are varied and include sandy loams, terra rossa soils and weathered limestone. It is a regular fruit source for Bin 28 Shiraz, Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon and Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz. It occasionally contributes fruit to St Henri.
Heathcote, Victoria
The central-Victorian region of Heathcote is renowned for its calcium-rich red Cambrian soils. It is a primary source of warm-climate shiraz and mataro. Bin 2 Shiraz Mataro comprises a small percentage of Heathcote material.
Henty, Victoria
The cool-maritime growing season, Great Southern Ocean breezes and free draining gravelly loams over red clays, weathered basalt and pockets of limestone, make the Henty wine region an ideal place to grow the classic Burgundian grape varieties. Bin 23 Pinot Noir, Bin 311 Chardonnay and Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay often comprise material from the 1965-established Drumborg Vineyard and grower vineyards.
McLaren Vale, South Australia
Established in the 1840s, the McLaren Vale wine region is typified by a classic Mediterranean climate with cool winters, warm summers, low rainfall and moderating sea breezes. The vineyards, many old-vine and centenary plantings, contribute fruit to Grange, St Henri Shiraz, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz and Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon. Penfolds has been sourcing fruit from McLaren Vale since the late 19th century.
Tasmania
The island of Tasmania, despite its geological diversity, is the only Australian state-wide Geographical Indication. Penfolds sources cool climate A-grade chardonnay, pinot noir and gewürztraminer from the Tamar Valley near Launceston and southerly Derwent Valley vineyards near Hobart. Typically, these vineyards contribute fruit to Cellar Reserve wines, Bin 311 Chardonnay and Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay.
Tumbarumba, New South Wales
The sub-alpine slopes of Tumbarumba, at the foot of the Snowy Mountains and the Great Dividing Range, are home to the highest altitude vineyards in New South Wales. Chardonnay ripens slowly and crisply in this cool-climate region making it an ideal component of Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay in some years. Bin 311 Chardonnay also draws a significant amount of fruit from this region.
