1962 BIN 60A CABERNET SAUVIGNON SHIRAZ ««««« Drink now to 2040.
The 1962 Penfolds Bin 60A is one of the greatest Australian wines ever made. In a world where egos readily clashed, the Bin 60A unified wine critics and show judges. It is Penfolds most successful show wine, winning 19 trophies and 33 gold medals.
A meeting of oenological, physical and philosophical achievement, 1962 Bin 60A is a cross-regional blend that demonstrates the emerging Penfolds House Style of the 1960s and the success of blending cabernet and shiraz. In seeking his ethereal wine, Max Schubert identified that the perfumed cassis/violet aromas, elegant flavours and fine-grained tannins of cool-climate Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon could be complemented by the warm-climate characteristics of ripe fruit and round chocolaty textures of Barossa Valley shiraz.
Medium-deep brick crimson. Lovely ground coffee, vellum, roasted walnut, tobacco leaf and chinotto aromas with salted liquorice notes. Beautifully concentrated roasted coffee, tobacco and roasted walnut flavours, supple and rich mid- palate creaminess, fine loose-knit lacy/ silky textures and underlying notes of tar and roses. Gorgeous density, a fine-boned structure and a beautiful feathery plume. In suspended animation. How long will it last? Very rare, with only 425 dozen made.
Two-thirds Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon (Sharam s Block and Block 20) and one-third Barossa Valley shiraz (Kalimna Vineyard s original shiraz blocks). Vinified and oak matured at Magill Estate. Bottled December 1963 at Auldana.
Gentle, penetrating, ethereal and evergreen. Reserved, effortlessly expansive and silky textured. Gracefully fades at the finish. (NB)
A polished leather and spicy bouquet followed by a silken palate with flavours spanning forest floor, flower gardens, lacquered wood and antique leather. A marvellous wine in wonderful condition. (JH)

The 1963 Bin 64 Cabernet Sauvignon a 100 percent Block 42 wine was entered into the 1964 Royal Melbourne Wine Show and won the prestigious Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for a one-year-old dry red. It also had a stellar career on the Australian Wine Show circuit.
Vintaged at Magill and bottled at Auldana in October 1964. A forerunner to Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon. Highlights the exceptional terroir of the 19th-century planted Block 42 vineyard.
Medium deep crimson. Intense walnut and tawny-polished mahogany aromas with liquorice and graphite notes. Fading but still drinkable with sweet tawny mahogany/ polished leather flavours, fine-bitter chalky textures and a fine and long fresh acidity. Finishes leafy firm and long. Very rare, with only 500 dozen made.
Complex and developed with vegetal, meaty and savoury notes. Lightly liqueur/tawny port-like in flavour and gently spicy with silken/worn velvet textures. (NB)
Very strong Christmas cake, leather and graphite on the nose. Over mature wine but it still expresses a leafy fine-grained cabernet sauvignon character. (FW)
1966 BIN 620 CABERNET SAUVIGNON SHIRAZ ««« Penfolds 1966 Bin 620 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz was almost as famous as 1962 Bin 60A in its day.
