Experimentation
The courage to venture beyond has always been part of our DNA. For nearly two centuries, Penfolds has continually pushed boundaries and experimented with new methods in wide production. This has led to the creation of internationally recognised wines like Grange.
GRANGE
The failure of Max Schubert's first Grange experiment only made him more determined to succeed.
Max continued to craft Grange vintages in secret, hiding three vintages '57, '58 and '59 in the depths of the cellars at Magill Estate. Eventually the Penfolds board re-tasted the original vintage and ordered production of Grange to restart, just in time for the 1960 vintage. From then on, international acknowledgment and awards were bestowed on Grange.
