A true showcase of warm-climate Australian shiraz – ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is our very first Bin wine. Today, it is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented.
Bin 28 Shiraz was developed during Max Schubert’s Grange project and modelled off a trial that comprised 100% shiraz sourced exclusively from the esteemed Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard. This early experiment set the blueprint for the wine, which remains largely unchanged today.
Increasing demand for this hugely popular wine through the latter half of the 20th century, allowed Penfolds winemakers to include material from other warm-climate South Australian wine regions. No matter the sourcing, the character of Bin 28 has always remained paramount to any winemaking decisions.
A shiraz revered by collectors and red wine drinkers alike.
Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region Australian shiraz that epitomises the Penfolds House Style with ripe choc-berry fruits, firm tannin structure and generous flavours. It is a style that impresses immediately upon each release, with an approachability that suggests early to medium-term drinking. It does, however, continue to evolve and develop further complexity in the cellar, making Bin 28 shiraz a hugely popular wine among collectors all over the world.
Bin 28 Shiraz is one of the most sought-after wines within the Penfolds Collection. It is the oldest Bin-range wine, born from Max Shubert’s famous Grange trials of the 1950s, and is recognised for its considerable value.
The first vintage of Bin 28 was a 100% shiraz wine sourced exclusively from the esteemed Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard. Fruit sourcing for this wine evolved over time and today it is proudly an epitomising representation of Penfolds multi-region winemaking approach. Barossa Valley, however, remains at the heart of this wine and is always well represented with each release.
Its distinct character is framed by plush berry fruits, ripe tannin structure and generous flavours, and its consistency has garnered Bin 28 a significant following.
With its vibrant aromas and juicy palate, Bin 28 Shiraz is regularly considered a ‘palate-friendly’ wine upon release. This immediate approachability often leads Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz to be drunk earlier than its other Bin wine compatriots. This does not mean, however, that you won’t find it tucked away in people’s cellars.
Bin 28 regularly develops further complexity and great character with careful long-term cellaring, and offers a drinking window that extends more than two decades into the future.
When thinking about what food to pair with Australian shiraz, there are many options to choose from.
It is a good idea to try and match the intensity of the wine with the intensity of the food. Bin 28 Shiraz is often paired with a wagyu steak as it has the bold character to stand up to the bold flavours of the cut. Other rich meat dishes also work well, including slow cooked beef cheeks, lasagne, or a juicy Angus burger.
The soft sweet character of Barossa shiraz also means that it can be often paired at the end of the meal – think of pouring a glass of carefully cellared Bin 28 alongside a warm slice of plum pudding.
