This marks the continuing refinement and stylist interpretation if this variety from Penfolds. The fruit comes from vineyards in Tasmania. Fragrant spicy forest floor and sour cherry on the nose with a polished and seductively medium-bodied elegance on the palate. Seamless integration of fruit and oak. A distinctive vibrant cranberry juice lift adds to the palate. One of the best of this relatively late inclusion in the portfolio. The best pinot yet with the influence of the cooler Tassie fruit a key factor. Cellar: 8 years. 13.5% alc – 95 points
"Bin 23 looks rather stemmy and straightforward and it dips into soft rhubarb and cherry notes, augmented by a slightly raw and edgy acid line that detracts from the flow of said fruit. I would prefer to see a slightly darker core of dark Pinot in this wine to give it more mid-palate heft. Drink now - 2027. 13.5% alc – 17.5 points"
Candy strawberry red.
Aromatically, this wine is remarkably complex for a lighter bodied style, tantalising. Dark cherries, strawberry sorbet and barberries provide a delightful aromatic lift. The fruit is ably supported by an enchanting oak-char nuance. Earthy forest floor, bramble and truffle notes add further complexity. On the savoury side of the equation are notes of cold lamb, capocollo and pimento stuffed olives in brine. Wet slate and river pebbles round out a complex aromatic profile.
A lovely texture on the palate, with fine, delicate tannins and just ripe phenolics. Steely acidity drives the length providing succulent minerality. Cherry pips, sour cherry and cranberry are complemented by an Aperol-like bitterness on the finish. Very seductive, the second glass beckons. A versatile wine to pair with food, especially duck and other game dishes.
Tasmania’s winter rainfall was below average, however a wetter than average October resulted in favourable soil moisture profiles leading into budburst. A series of cold fronts brought spring snow to elevated parts of the state, but there were no frost events in the vineyards. Warmer summer temperatures prevailed throughout the season, however there were no days recorded >35°C. The optimal conditions during veraison ensured there was no disease pressure. Bunch weights were below average; however, quality was exceptional in both company and grower vineyards.

Bin 23’s name is derived from the Pinot Noir maturation location ‘Cellar 23’ at Magill Estate. First vintaged in 2009, it is a distinctive style especially made for Penfolds drinkers who enjoy rich, mouth-filling wines with plenty of fruit generosity and flavour length.
