Bin 128 comprises fruit sourced from the unique terra rossa red clay over limestone soils of Coonawarra, a region that exemplifies the perfume, transparency and seductive nature of cool-climate red wines.
Coonawarra has remained the source of shiraz fruit for Bin 128 since the inaugural release of the 1962 vintage. It was conceived as an interesting cool-climate counterpoint to the richly concentrated warm climate Bin 28.
The style is instantly recognisable as Penfolds and continues to please with each release, often outperforming expectations as a medium-term drinking wine. To further enhance the regional qualities of Bin 128, the wine is matured in a mixture of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads.
As a single-region wine, Bin 128 is affected by the swinging tendency of Coonawarra's weather, with both continental and maritime climates. Through careful vineyard management, we have been able to form a consistent Bin 128 character, that displays distinct a variation vintage to vintage – it is a true representation of time and place.
