Quantum is the continuation of a twenty-year endeavor from when Australian vine cuttings were planted in Californian soil. A Wine of the World that encapsulates a bold blending alliance, Quantum reveals a wine that shows wisdom, crafted with conviction but also embedded in the “quality-first” philosophy that underpins Penfolds flagships.

This blend assembles parcels of prized cabernet sauvignon from some of the Napa Valley’s best vineyards and pedigreed shiraz from South Australia. This is a first for Penfolds.

"(USA and Australia) This is a wine of phenomenal power and concentration, and seemingly endless persistence. A mixture of dark berry fruits are lurking beneath savoury layers of smoky, earthy graphite, charcuterie and subtle spices. It carries the distinctive Penfolds stamp. For all its muscle, it is remarkably approachable already. A great wine, and a worthy running-mate for Grange. (13% shiraz. The US cabernet is from Oakville and Diamond Mountain. Drink 2021-2053 – 99 points"
"What sticks with you about this global blend of Napa and Southern Australian wine is the intense and transparent purple and blue fruit. Lots of blackberry and blueberry aromas with some stones and flowers, such as violets. It’s a very layered and intense wine with very refined, creamy and chewy tannins. Full and very impressive. Very Penfolds. Mouth-filling texture. It’s made mostly from Napa grapes and predominantly from Oakville and Diamond Mountain. About one-fifth is from South Australia. Aged in 80% new American oak and 20% new French. Try after 2026 – 98 points."
"Deep colour. Beautiful dark chocolate, blackberry aromas with roasted chestnut, apricot, chinotto, truffle notes. Densely concentrated wine with saturated dark chocolate, blackberry, boysenberry liquorice flavours, complex apricot/stone fruit notes, superbly integrated roasted chestnut/ hazelnut/malty oak, lovely mid-palate richness and fine looseknit supple gravelly tannins. Finishes firm and tight with a beautiful inky plume. A cross-Pacific, partially barrel-fermented blend based on rigorous classification and the best parcels of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (87%) and South Australian Shiraz (13%). Elemental, multi-layered and brash, yet unmistakably Penfolds in style with superb fruit definition, oak integration and structure. Will take some years to unfold, but the wait will be worthwhile. Drink 2027-2045+ – 97 points"
Deep red, magenta brightness at the rim.
A complex dark-berried spectrum commands immediate focus and with further attention blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry can be teased out.
A blue-berried wash and glistening film covers the palate with conviction. Viscous/marbled texture combines with suppleness and acid succulence. Respectful acidity tightens the palate, clenching/compressing around a core of graphite and hazelnut: Graphite confirms varietal and identity. Hazelnut confirms oak maturation. A plush texture which cushions the palate. Exotic intrigue. Sweetness that dials up over time with air. All boxes ticked.
Our California journey started decades ago in the Camatta Hills vineyard, Paso Robles. In the 1980’s, we initiated an ambitious viticultural program in Australia called ‘Heritage Selections’. From our most prized vineyards, winemakers sought to identify single vineyards, blocks and vines that produced the best quality fruit. Cuttings from these exceptional Heritage Selections were then propagated and eventually sent across the world to California.
