A short hour’s drive from Adelaide, a visit to the Barossa Valley region is not complete without a stop at the Penfolds Cellar Door. Barossa Valley is one of Australia’s most renowned wine regions, heaped in wine history. It is known for its red wine and has played a vital role in the Penfolds story – including the development of the famous Penfolds Grange.
A road trip to the Barossa Valley is the perfect way to experience the natural beauty and exceptional wine South Australia has to offer. Below is an itinerary that guides you to the Penfolds doorstep, with a scenic drive through Adelaide Hills, epic lookouts of the region and finally, a memorable wine experience where you can make your own Penfolds blend.
First stop, Magill Estate Kitchen for brunch. Only 8kms from Adelaide, the Kitchen is the ideal spot to start your day trip off the right way. Enjoy a brunch overlooking the Magill Estate vineyard and the skyline of Adelaide city.
Next up, take the scenic route through the Adelaide Hills towards Williamstown in the Barossa Valley, where the famous ‘Whispering Wall’ awaits.
The Whispering Wall, which is the retaining wall of the Barossa Reservoir, was built between 1899 and 1903 and was a revolutionary engineering feat for its time, attracting world-wide recognition.
But what draws visitors to the Whispering Wall is its unique acoustic effects: words whispered at one side can be clearly heard at the other, more than 100 metres away.
A stop off at Mengler’s Lookout and Sculpture Park is well worth the visit, where sweeping 180-degree views of the Barossa Valley await.
The Sculpture Park is also on offer, boasting a number of distinctive abstract art pieces that have been sculpted by a number of renowned local artists.
Built in 1911, the Penfolds Barossa Valley site became a focal point of Penfolds winemaking in the 1970s as more fruit was sourced from the region. Now, the Cellar Door showcases the Penfolds collection of wines. Taste the range through an exclusive tasting flight, including Bin 51 Riesling, Bin 311 Chardonnay, Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz, Bin 150 Shiraz, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, St Henri Shiraz and finishing with Father Tawny. A glass of Grange is also available.
Now you’ve learnt about Penfolds wines, you can become a master winemaker for a day with the Make Your Own Blend experience. Enter the winemakers’ laboratory and get to work blending your own wine to take home from Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. Sessions run daily at 10:30am or 2:00pm and run for approximately 45 minutes. Bookings are essential.
Finish your day at Kingsford The Barossa with a private tasting experience, sampling wines that are rarely offered for tasting anywhere in the world. Explore Penfolds Icons; from the classics to special releases, then, enjoy a curated four-course dinner paired with Penfolds wines at Orleana Restaurant. Bookings are essential.
