Recognisable by the unmistakable Penfolds DNA that defines our House Style, our sub-regional wines stand as a unique exploration within our single region range, one of the four distinct styles at the core of our winemaking philosophy. Emerging from places of significance, these wines embody the essence of their respective terroirs, capturing the nuances and characteristics specific to each sub region.
When sub regions like Marananga in the Barossa Valley, and Oakville in the Napa Valley captivate our attention, we are inspired to capture and share the flavours inherent to the area. Influenced by the soil, climate, and geography, sub-regional wines are further shaped by their microclimate's impact on grape development. These subtle climatic variations add a layer of complexity, and our winemakers can craft wines that transpose terroir from vineyard to glass.
As a sub region flourishes, it seems only fitting we gather quality fruit and craft wines that tell the tale of vintage excellence. Below, you will discover wines from Polish Hill River, Marananga, High Eden and Oakville sub regions.
Marananga is situated slightly northwest of the centre of the Barossa Valley floor, where its warm, dry conditions and rich red soil form the foundation for some of the region's most renowned wines. The terroir of Marananga is distinct, playing a crucial role in shaping the character of the grapes, particularly those of Shiraz.
Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz, while unmistakably reflecting Penfolds House Style, also presents a remarkable expression of Marananga's terroir. A contemporary shiraz, framed by both French and American oak, old and new. It features unctuous juniper and blueberry characters, reminiscent of those occasionally found in Grange from that area.
A definitive Penfolds style based on Grange-quality vineyards and central Barossa terroir. The purity of fruit, tannic seam and sympathetic maturation all deliver a strong individual identity.

Polish Hill River, a renowned sub region in the Clare Valley wine region, boasts distinctive features–slightly higher elevation, unique slate and shale soils, and cool nights with warm days– ideal for cultivating riesling. This supports the retention of acidity, enhancing the freshness and vibrancy of the wine, often resulting in citrus, floral and mineral characteristics.
Cellar Reserve Polish Hill River Riesling is a hand-crafted, small-batch wine that is an ode to the Polish Hill River sub region and our Cellar Reserve range. It offers lavender and citrus notes and can last over 20 years with careful cellaring.
We source fruit from High Eden, a sub region within Eden Valley, for wines such as Bin 51 Eden Valley Riesling in exceptional vintages. And whilst fruit sourcing for Reserve Bin A Adelaide Hills Chardonnay varies, it is usually crafted from the best-performing sub region in the Adelaide Hills, including that of Piccadilly Valley.
Penfolds presence in Oakville in California’s Napa Valley celebrates geographical distinction and a sense of place. Our curiosity revealed diverse soils with excellent drainage and a climate moderated by its proximity to San Pablo Bay. Here, cabernet sauvignon grapes of concentrated complexity thrive, allowing Penfolds winemakers to uphold our quality first philosophy. The year 2023 marked the release of our inaugural Oakville Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon – a wine that exemplifies the region with energetic blue fruits and a luxurious plush texture.
Penfolds sub-regional wines exemplify the essence of terroir, revealing unique characters shaped by soil, climate and geography. These expressions stand as a testament to our commitment to excellence in fine wine. And as our winemaking endeavours continue to evolve, we anticipate showcasing more sub region blends.
