Sourced from exceptional vineyards across Bordeaux, our French Winemaking Trial comprises three classic varietals of the region, crafted using time-proven Penfolds winemaking techniques. Anchored by a philosophy of selecting grapes and blending quality wines to a house style, FWT 585 continues to propel Penfolds into its future.
Our FWT Cabernet Merlot Petit Verdot is a wine that brings to life the notion of fate. The wheels were set in motion more than 70 years ago, and while curiosity is what originally took Penfolds Chief Winemaker Max Schubert to Bordeaux all those years ago, excellence is what took us back.
Penfolds was always destined to land in a region steeped in history, heritage and winemaking tradition. Our rich history of experimentation and a quest to source quality grapes from afar continues to inspire our winemaking curiosity and intrinsically link us to our past, present and future.
Like many great Penfolds wines born from experimentation and trial; RWT 798, Yattarna Bin 144 and the 1951 experimental Grange, FWT 585 now embarks on its own trial journey.
This varietally-expressive wine offers a generous mid-palate, fruit intensity and a supple yet assertive tannin structure. Within the blend, each varietal showcases a distinctive component. Cabernet sauvignon offers varietal characters of dark fruits and linear tannin drive. The merlot delivers fruit generosity and petit verdot brings a ‘blocky’ structural element with its own tannin profile.
