"The single vineyard star of the Collection, the fruit is placed in open fermenters before basket pressing and transfer to barrels to finish fermentation. Maturation is then for 19 months in French oak, 90% new, and American, 10% new. Dark magenta hue, this is concentrated with a structure perhaps a little more formal than some. There are notes of blackcurrants, new leather, florals, bay leaves, soy and licorice. Early days but the youth of this wine is apparent. A silky palate with force, real underlying power with oak integrating superbly. Impressively balanced with excellent length, the intensity is maintained for the full journey. A wonderful Magill, but it really does need time. Enjoy over the next fifteen to thirty years. 14.5% alc – 97 points"
"The only single-vineyard wine in the Australian Collection (although the Oakville Napa Valley Cabernet is also a single-vineyard wine, from Block 13A on the Gamble Ranch), the 2021 Magill Estate Shiraz leads, as per usual, with lavender, bergamot (Earl Grey tea), milk chocolate, raspberry coulis and red licorice. The tannins have a good feeling in the mouth— chewy, full, ductile and fresh. There's something like nori, brine, red apple skins and something Japanese (togarashi?). It's a lovely wine. Gorgeous, in fact. Inky. Drink 2023 – 2051. 14.5% alc – 97 points"
"This is typically a most elegant and stylish expression of shiraz from this famous estate. Notes of African violet and liqueur cherry with a trace of blueberry emerge immediately. The palate is supple and delightfully integrated with a very long finish. You get a little savoury meat charcuterie character as well. One of the best of this great wine. Thoroughly beautiful and one of the very best. Cellar: 20 years. 14.5% alc – 97 points"
Deep dark red with a purple core.
There is always a lovely familiarity to a new release Magill Estate Shiraz. A wine that always proudly showcases the unique characteristics of our home in the Adelaide foothills. Sweet fruits are to the fore, blackcurrant pastille, cherry liqueur, stewed mulberry compote and blueberry danish. The floral aromas lean towards violets and lavender, the latter famously lining the driveway through the vines. Sweet vanilla and cinnamon custard and a hint of liquored chocolate add to the allure. Savoury notes of olive tapenade and bresaola provide a counterweight.
Dense and generous. The sweet fruits make room for mouthwatering, savoury meaty flavours. Seared venison fillet. Beef Wellington. Demi-glace. Dark chocolate sweetness fills the mid-palate. Fine ripe tannins wrap the fruit. An oak derived creaminess coats the palate. There is a lovely balance between acid, tannins, oak and fruit. A wine that speaks strongly to a sense of place.
Overall, a very mild growing season. Dry conditions in July were countered by good spring rainfall in September and October. Warm conditions prevailed throughout spring, driven by above-average minimum and maximum temperatures. There were only a handful of days above 35°C. Conditions in February and March were mild. Veraison was later than average, pushing harvest into March. The grapes were harvested in two parcels separated by a week. Most of the older vine material was picked on the 16th and 17th of February, then the newer plantings on the 23rd and 24th of February.

The historic Penfolds Magill Estate is one of the few single vineyards in the world located within city boundaries. First planted in 1844. at its peak in 1949, then planted to several varieties, the vineyard covered 120 hectares. First produced in 1983, Magill Estate Shiraz is distinctly different to the mainstream Penfolds style, showing intense floral/ blackberry/ aniseed aromas, smooth richness and a ‘long spine’.
