Penfolds Cellar Reserve wines are alternative, limited release wines that explore the innovative boundaries of viticulture, vinification and style. Cellar Reserve Pinot Noir is sourced from a number of premium vineyards and a variety of clones in the cool-climate region of Tasmania. Made in the original open fermenters at Magill Estate, this premium Pinot Noir was coldsoaked, hand-plunged and underwent natural fermentation prior to maturation in both new and seasoned French oak barriques. It was neither fined nor filtered. Free run only.

An authentic boutique winemaking approach within a larger enterprise."

Brooding cherry red.
Instantly Pinot Noir; instantly Adelaide Hills.
Above (treble, higher notes): glazed cherry, panna cotta/brioche ‘sweetness’.
Below (bass, lower register): stewed rhubarb stalkiness and tell-tale Pinot cold lamb.
In harmony: Subtle cedary oak and a spicy propulsion of turmeric & ginger.
Round & lush. Full & forceful. To style.
Fruits abound – white mulberry, wild raspberry, red currant most apparent. Other fruits require further coaxing…
Texturally - a plush crème brûlée mid-palate and a rhubarb ‘tartness’ to finish.
Omnipresent oak all but soaked up, leaving only an unapologetic faint tannin slipstream.
Above-average winter and spring rainfall offered the vines in the Adelaide Hills healthy soil moisture profiles for the growing season. September rainfall was significantly above the long-term average. Cool days and cold nights slowed vine growth in early spring with temperatures eventually warming in October. A mild and mostly dry start to summer was followed by two significant rain events after Christmas. January was mild with few hot days and unseasonal rain. Moving into Autumn, mild days slowed ripening with cool nights and warm days persisting until harvest. Mild conditions allowed for a long hang time resulting in terrific flavour development and good acid retention. An excellent vintage for Adelaide Hills Chardonnay.
