Created in the 1990s as part of the evolving Penfolds white wine development program, Bin 51 captures many attributes of the Eden Valley locale. The region’s high altitude and cool climate induces riesling with great finesse and elegance and a capacity for long-term cellaring. South Australia has gained worldwide recognition for producing definitive world-class Riesling and Eden Valley always features. In their youth, the wines feature scented floral and citrus aromas, with a mineral edge and marked natural acidity, contributing significantly to the palate texture and flavour.

"Amid the attention given to Penfolds’ annual Chardonnay releases, Bin 51 often gets the crumbs of wine writers words. So, let’s hear it for a wine first created in the 1990s as part of a white wine development programme, and which celebrates a grape variety deserving of a little more attention in the Penfolds wine universe. Brings the essence of Eden Valley Riesling to life from the first scent of citrus blossom, honeysuckle and floral talc with the zest of lime, lemon curd and apple. That’s a big wow! The palate expands briskly led by those arresting floral aromatics and rests fully in the embrace of exuberant citrus: grapefruit pith, lemon sorbet, lime cordial. Great tension follows, hand in hand with superb acid drive. A light chalky texture is apparent, but these are early days. Bin 51 is generally released young; I would love to see this wine given the Yattarna treatment and released with some age."
"Consistently one of Australia’s finest rieslings. This has a beautifully fresh and vibrant aroma greeting from the start. There are notes of perfumed lemon zest and lime jumping from the glass. The palate is fine and precise with a nice acidity driving through the middle. Sure, it’s light bodied but there is power here that extends through the palate which displays a tight degree of tension – 95 points"
Very pale gold with fluorescent lime green hues.
Highly perfumed. Varietal markers immediately apparent. Scented bath salts and floral notes of white citrus blossom and jasmine allude to regionality. On further inspection, scents emerge of blackcurrant leaf and finger limes/lemon pith. A classic Eden Valley Riesling.
Very fresh and flavorful. First impressions are of lemon zest and just squeezed lime juice. The palate has a fleshy, pithy texture with chalky minerality and mouth-watering acidity. At once salivating, inviting, elegant. While this is a lighter-bodied wine, it has plenty of volume and power. A spell in the cellar will invite the emergence of more complex maturation characters.
The 2024 growing season in Eden Valley was helped by plentiful winter rainfall, with heavy falls recorded in June. Spring was relatively dry and mild, providing optimal conditions for budburst and flowering. There were some reports of frost, however the vines in High Eden vineyards were minimally impacted given the steep exposed terrain. Rain at the beginning of December boosted the soil moisture levels, setting the vines up well for the remainder of the season. Summer was mild with no heatwaves which extended the hang time. Eventually, the weather did warm in late summer with short bursts of heat. Autumn was warm and dry, providing optimal ripeness in the fruit with the retention of lovely natural acidity.
