Bin 138 draws its inspiration from the wines of Southern Rhône, where shiraz, grenache and mataro (mourvèdre) are blended in varying proportions to create full-bodied wines possessing rich and heady perfume. Each year fruit for Bin 138 is sourced from old Barossa Valley vines (some more than 100 years old) and then matured for 12 to 15 months in seasoned oak hogsheads to allow the different varietals to shine through.

The blend – understated yet serious. The result – harmony, more-ish.

" Deep crimson. Lovely boysenberry, musky plum, black cherry, dark chocolate aromas with graphite herb garden notes. Generous and buoyant with rich boysenberry, dark plum, dark cherry praline flavours, with underlying ginger notes, plentiful fine chalky/ chocolaty tannins, superb mid-palate volume and integrated fresh pure linear acidity. Lovely mineral length.
A brilliant early drinking style with plenty of fruit generosity, volume and mineral freshness. It will age, but the best times are now. A very successful follow up vintage. "
"Bathed in glorious black fruit depth, this is a blend that leads out with inviting appeal and concludes with the structural framework that declares Penfolds. Drought season dryness has been masterfully handled. The tannin sophistication on display here is rarely seen in this blend, a super fine splay of mineral texture that weaves a fabric of endurance, drawing out a finish simultaneously graceful, confident and enticing. "
"Year after year, this is one of my favourite reds from the annual Collection. A gorgeous Barossa red and a fine example if anyone wanted to know just what the region can and should offer. The aroma gives forth enticing notes of chocolate, dry herbs, mocha, spices, cassis, cocoa powder and mulberries. On the palate, notes of molten chocolate and fruitcake emerge. Rich and juicy, this is still very young. The wine might be firm, but there is a lovely seductive texture. Surely a decade or more ahead of it. Love this wine."
Fragrant, welcoming.
Warm, sweet spices – cardamom and a touch of paprika propelled above; omnipresent dried and glacéed fruits (cherry and strawberry pip).
Charmingly reminds of a just-baked clafoutis (with black cherry), dusted with icing sugar.
No oak noted, expertly hidden. No variety dominating.
A medium-bodied wine, nevertheless still quite rich and opulent.
Certainly an interplay of varieties, creating an interlocked fruit weave/gauze (pomegranate, strawberry).
This woven textural impression is supported by a mouth-watering finish, ushered via a lacy mesh of assorted tannins.
Well-shaped and formed; juicy, succulent and mouth-coating.
Barossa translated differently.
The 2019 growing season was extremely dry and warm. In the 12 months to March, the region had only 61% of the long-term average rainfall. Spring temperatures were slightly below-average driven by lower minimum temperatures (-2.5°C) including two below 0°C events during September, which resulted in frost events on 4th September and 29th September. Summer was very warm, with December and January well above-average driven by a combination of both higher maximum and minimum temperatures. The Kalimna vineyard experienced 31 days of temperatures exceeding 35°C. While March was also dry, crucially it was not too hot allowing for an orderly harvest. Low yields delivered Barossa Valley shiraz with dark colours, intense depth of flavour and ripe firm tannin structure.

Bin 138 Shiraz Grenache Mataro (Mourvèdre) is a traditional regional blend based on old vines planted as far back as 1895. The first vintages (1992–1997) were released as ‘Old Vine Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre’. It was elevated to Bin status in 1998. These three varieties have formed the backbone of the Barossa’s vineyard heritage since the late 19th century and were used in both table wine and fortified wine production.
