A limited collectable series paying homage to our legends.
Originally launched as part of our 175th anniversary celebrations in 2019, the Tribute Range comprises four limited wines honouring the visionaries who shape Penfolds history. While our wines have always been crafted by a dedicated team of winemakers, viticulturists, and cellar hands, certain individuals really forged the path for where Penfolds is today. The Tribute Range tells their stories.
An ode to those who dared to defy convention.
Penfolds is anchored in experimentation, curiosity and an uncompromising commitment to quality – characteristics passed down from generation to generation. Much of Penfolds success is attributed to the many brave, smart and driven characters who had a vision and pursued it relentlessly, always believing great could be greater. Penfolds founders Mary and Dr Christopher Penfold, Chemist Ray Beckwith and first Chief Winemaker Max Schubert played an instrumental role with their vision, and many of their philosophies continue to shape Penfolds today. Their spirit lives on in every bottle, a timeless reminder of our relentless pursuit of excellence.
Max Schubert
The Esteemed Creator
Max Schubert is among our most esteemed creators and our first Chief Winemaker. Max crafted a dynasty of wines and became the driving force behind some of Penfolds most outstanding achievements, which are still celebrated today.
This Barossa Valley shiraz and Coonawarra cabernet blend from the 2016 vintage is a quintessential Australian blend and a celebration of the pioneering winemaking style Max created. Two of Australia’s most profound regional and varietal alignments blend to make an age-worthy wine that exudes Penfolds House Style.
Dr Christopher Penfold
The Noble Explorer
Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold began it all. A doctor with an eye for winemaking, he and his wife, Mary, sought a new calling in Australia. They found it at Magill Estate, near Adelaide’s city centre. Here, Christopher planted vines and set in motion philosophies that would remain with Penfolds to this day.
This full-bodied shiraz from the 2017 vintage, with its ripe fruit aromas, voluminous richness and subtle oak spice, is dedicated to him.
Mary Penfold
The Commander in Chief
Mary Penfold was the original leading lady. A force to be reckoned with, Mary’s progressive attitude catapulted Penfolds forward as winemakers. She’d command from a white mare, watching over the vineyard with her treasured spyglass close at hand.
Opulent red shiraz fruits are supported by the fine structural cabernet sauvignon. All beautifully captured in this 2017 vintage, classic Penfolds multi-regional blend, worthy of Mary’s strong spirit.
Dr Ray Beckwith
The Creative Genius
For nearly 40 years, Penfolds was Dr Ray Beckwith’s laboratory, where he was instrumental in the development of our leading red wines. His greatest discovery was the use of PH technology to prevent wine from spoiling.
This 2017 vintage wine bears all the hallmarks of South Australian cabernet sauvignon, with classic savoury notes supported by well-handled oak and supple tannins.
Join us in celebrating a legacy that spans generations with wines that are more than just a nod to the past but a celebration of the story yet written. As each bottle finds a place in your cellar, the legacy continues – a testament to the enduring spirit of Penfolds.
