Praise to the way these rieslings develop over time. By law they shouldn’t be released until after five years’ bottle age.”

"Highly floral citrus/orange blossom; layers of juicy fruits; terrific chalky acidity gives shape and length to the finish."
"Bin 51 Eden Valley riesling is always served first at the annual Penfolds tasting and I pretty much always love it. This is a dry, slatey release. Lime leaf, spice and juice. Seriously dry finish. Statement territory, with the acid and flavour to match. Feels tight, chalky and exact. Length is there. I didn’t read any of the specs until many weeks after the tasting but, having now done so, I’m not surprised to see that it sits at the lower end of the alcohol spectrum for a Bin 51, and has the dry/acidic/tart personality to match, in a good way. In short, it’s a really good wine."
"Light, bright yellow colour with a fragrant, flowery bouquet, fresh and lifted, with a talcum powder overtone. The wine is very restrained and delicate but also fruity and accessible. It's quite soft and the acidity is not challenging, but the wine tastes dry."
Light lime green
All regional riesling markers on display. An array of florals – white spring flowers (jonquil), and hints of fresh lime. Crushed mixed-stone gravel … not quite at talc stage. Yet. Aromatically extols an undeniable purity, minerality and freshness!
Very lime – citrus driven palate augmented by just ripe Granny Smith apple, cucumber granita and traces of juniper berry. A distinct chalky acid presence noted, yet ideally balanced so as not to intrude or distract. Admittedly a wishful second guess, but no reason to suspect why this palate shouldn’t remain intact over the next decade or three! Imminently drinkable.
Above average winter rainfall in Eden Valley provided good soil moisture profiles leading into spring. Drier conditions then prevailed from September through to April which was 22% down on the long-term average. Spring provided ideal conditions for flowering and fruit set while the growing season experienced temperatures above the long-term average, with twelve summer days recorded above 35°C. Healthy canopies shielded the grapes from adversity and with careful use of supplementary irrigation the grapes were able to ripen evenly across blocks. The 2018 vintage quality was exceptional, with lovely varietal flavour and natural acidity.

Bin 51 was created in the 1990s as part of the evolving Penfolds white wine development program. The first vintage in 1999 was labelled Eden Valley Reserve Bin Riesling. The evolution of Penfolds Bin 51 Eden Valley Riesling opens another chapter in a long history of Penfolds involvement in winemaking from this variety.
