Peter Gago Announced as Australia’s Winemaker of the Year 2014
26 SEPTEMBER 2014
Penfolds Chief Winemaker, Peter Gago, has been named 2014 Winemaker of the Year and is also the recipient of the Len Evans Award for Leadership by Gourmet Traveller WINE, announced at a dinner held in Sydney last night.
The double honour, makes Peter the first person to receive both accolades at the coveted industry awards.
In the words of the magazine, this recognition not only celebrates Peter’s role as a world-class winemaker but also for his abilities as a leader, educator and global brand ambassador.
One of eight finalists in 2014, Peter’s natural affinity and passion for winemaking has been evident long before he joined Penfolds in 1989. Peter’s careful custodianship has ensured that Penfolds wines continue to set the benchmark for their style and quality, against a backdrop of 170 years of Penfolds winemaking. As only the fourth Chief Winemaker at Penfolds, Peter strenuously advocates that the award is an acknowledgement of the efforts of the complete winemaking team which includes Steve Lienert, Kym Schroeter, Andrew Baldwin, Adam Clay, Matt Woo and Stephanie Dutton.
“To be recognised by Gourmet Traveller WINE as Winemaker of the Year is a great honour,” says Peter. “First and foremost, this is a team win, an award that I’m very proud to accept on behalf of all at Penfolds.”
